Rodoni Cape (Kepi i Rodonit)
a magical triangle of nature, history and gastronomy
(Shqip: nje trekendesh i magjishem natyre, historie dhe gastronomie)
Experiencing a destination many times and in different ways is a “trend” that almost the whole world is going through, where every traveller is constantly looking for.as unique experience.
Albania is lately no exception to this trend, showing us from time to time well-known places
where you can go to gain experience.
Rodoni Cape, is in everyone's eye, the “peninsula” (a piece of land almost surrounded by water) where you go to visit old Skanderbeg Castle and Saint Anton's Church. In the spring, there you can enjoy the most beautiful season of the year with a wonderful natural show.
Today Rodoni Cape, and all area that is included in it, from the first villages to the coast, is a whole world of opportunities from tourism of all kinds: from gastronomic tourism, agrotourism, nature tours, adventures, to long vacation on the endless beaches of Lalzi Bay, Hamallaj and Rodon Bay itself, where sand beaches are among the most beautiful in Albania.
A trip to Rodon is no longer a tour of a few hours to discover the church or the castle at the port. It might be a well-planned multi-day holiday/adventure package with a lot of things to do and many places to see in addition to the classic ones already. So dare to plan a full weekend and start with a visit to one of the many agro-tourism farms or wineries, which has taken place in the magical hilly relief, flooded in the evergreen “Mediterranean Bushes”, refreshed with the water of more than 10 artificial lakes scattered at the food of the hills that have turned today into real tourism destination.
Duka Winery and Topana Lake
If we have to choose a name for your glass, let this name be Kantina Duka, which apart from the charm of the oldest drink in the world, offered strictly in absolute perfection. It uses all the benefits of nature, to offer you an exclusive place, next to the lake of Topana under a landscape where the quiet nature will take you to a completely different world. An oasis where the only sounds you'll hear are the chirping of birds, the quacking of geese and the lapping of small waves on the green shores.
Lunch at the Duka Restaurant is a gastronomic experience of superior levels, which together with a Duka glass of wine gives you brilliant time with your family or friends. And after lunch, you can fancy a kayak ride on Topana lake.
Resort Arbeni a White Beach getaway
Lately you can not only have a picnic on the beach in Rodon and spend only a day there. You can also take advantage of the stay at the Resort Arbeni, which respects nature in every aspect. Their wooden houses among the greenery are the place where you would like to wake up every morning and enjoy their lovely restaurant by the sea.
The cuisine naturally speaks the language of the sea and the finesse of Mediterranean cuisine. You can also order whatever you want and at Resort Arbeni they will be fully at your disposal.
All inclusive holidays at Melia Lalez
Melia arrived on the Albanian coast. The Spanish tourist giant, the hotel chain, as one of the most powerful brands in the world, has finally arrived in Albania with a total of eleven projects. One of which (the largest) is located right in Lalzi Bay, with an extension of several hectares, the largest investment was made in the Albanian tourism sector, setting the same standards as similar resorts in the world for “All inclusive” tourism. And who wouldn't want to spend a vacation like anywhere in the world, with the “pampering” (indulge with every attention, comfort, and kindness; spoiling) of luxury offers, just a few kilometers from your home. And above all, in a place surrounded by so much variety. Above all at the long beach you can enjoy breathtaking sunsets with the gastronomical experience of evening barbeque or tasting Italian cuisine at the Beach bar.
And during the days you stay at Melia Resort, take a chance to visit Rodoni castle and explore the cape on the path along it. Or visit St. Anthony Church.
Rodoni Castle
Rodoni Castle was built by Skandergbeg around the years 1451 - 1452 with additional construction in 1463, when Scanderbeg brought some masters from Ragusa. Its role was to guarantee a sea escape to Italy. The castle had a defence wall. This stronghold wall had another second wall parallel to the first one in a distance of 4,8 metres. Both the first and second wall had towers. There was a third tower which was situated 200 m inland from the cape. It was used to send fire signals to the Castle in Kruja.
After Skanderbeg's death the castle went under Venice control, which around 1500 when Durres felt the Ottoman threat, undertook further construction. Venice abandoned most of the Albanian coastline somewhere around 1571, Rodoni Castle included. Years later, after getting under Ottomans control, the castle was not anymore used for military purposes. It required additional protection constructions and was an easy target for attacks from the sea.
So it was turned into ruins nearly as a forgotten building.
St. Anthony Church
By the Rodoni Castle existed some catholic monasteries, mentioned in 13th - 14th century as the monastery of St. Anastasia, St. Nicholas, Virgin Mary and St. Anthony. The last one was the only one found in a ruined state several years ago. St. Anthony Church had a rectangle plan of 13,6 x 6,2 m. It was built in the 14th to 15th century in Roman architecture with Gothic elements. Today the church is restored by German funds, gaining a new value and showing two frescos paintings. Every year, on June 13th local people gather in the church to commemorate St. Anthony, called Shen Ndou by them.
